Abstract: | Biofibers are being used globally at a large scale as reinforcement material in polymer composites because of the advantages of low cost and renewability, which lead to sustainable engineering development. Their exceptional properties enhance the overall performance of the resulting composite material to a large degree. Therefore, this chapter is focused on providing an overview of plant-based biofibers and their properties. The diverse advantages, limitations, and different surface modification techniques to overcome these limitations along with the recent advancements in the field of biofibers are discussed in detail. This chapter also discusses the increasing applications of biofibers in different industries and their future scope in polymer composites. This information will provide an insight into different ways of utilizing biofibers to their full potential, which will result in minimizing the use of synthetic fibers and thus reducing the hazardous effects on the environment. These biofibers are a major step toward making the environment cleaner and safer. © 2022 Elsevier Ltd All rights reserved. |
